Snorri Goði's church at the base of Helgafell

Previous page Back to the top... Next page

The narrow strip on the north side of Snæfellsnes peninsula leads eventually to an area outside Stykkishólmur called Helgafell (``Holy mountain"). More of a hillock than a mountain, it has huge significance in Icelandic history. The Christian church at its base was built by Snorri Goði, who worshiped Þór before converting to Christianity.
