Part of Skaftafell park is the walk to Skaftafellsjökull itself, where the groaning and wheezing of ice pressure can be felt firsthand. The ice, flowing down from the icecap Vatnajökull, is filthy because of its rocky cargo, heavy rock scoured by the glacier as it heads toward the coast and the sandur (sand plains).
