Skeišarįrsandur

The sand plains in Southeast Iceland make for an unremarkable photo except to show the expanse of the sandur, such as Skeišarįrsandur (above), an enormous sand-plain construction of the heavy glaciers from the icecap Vatnajökull. Just as flooding (sometimes caused by a volcanic eruption underneath the icecap) wipes out farms in this part of the country, so the sandur extend the island's reach by building land out into what was sea.
