Kirkjubæjarklaustur got its tongue-unfriendly name from the words that make up its meaning: ``church farm convent." In the late 18th century the Laki volcanic eruptions destroyed much of the area, though it is still a quiet small town, with the ruins of farms still existing as a memento of the destruction.
